Interactive Checklists

Three quick audits you can run right here. By the end, you’ll know exactly where to improve.

Checklist 01

The Dashboard Check:
Can Your Boss Read Your Numbers?

Layout & Visual Flow

5-second test: Can someone without context spot the most important number within 5 seconds?
Meaningful colors: Do your colors communicate status (red = problem, green = on track) or are they just decorative?
Natural reading flow: Does the eye move naturally from the most important to the second-most important info?

Data Honesty

Context provided: Can you immediately tell if a number is good or bad? (A number without comparison is worthless.)
Honest axes: Does the Y-axis start at zero where it should? Or are small differences visually exaggerated?
Less is more: Have 3D effects, shadows, and unnecessary gridlines been removed so the data takes center stage?

Usability

Drill-down ready: Can users click deeper into the data without everything freezing or crashing?
Meeting-proof: Is the font large enough and contrast high enough for an old projector in a conference room?

Checklist 02

The Storytelling Audit:
Do Your Data Tell a Story?

Narrative Thread

One clear message: Is there a single point that runs through your presentation or just a series of charts?
“So what?” test: Can every listener immediately see why each slide matters to them?
Action titles: Does the slide title state a finding (“Revenue grew 23%”) instead of a label (“Revenue Development”)?

Audience Fit

Plain language: Would someone without your expertise understand what you’re saying without footnotes?
Call to action: Does your audience know what to do next? Or just what they now know?
Right dose: Are you showing only what’s needed for the decision or everything you analyzed?

Impact

Tangible comparisons: Do you use analogies to make big numbers relatable? (e.g. “That’s the size of 3 football fields”)
Room to think: Is there at least one slide that leaves space for a pause instead of pushing more data?

Checklist 03

The Data Strategy Check:
Are You Actually Using Your Data?

Data Foundations

Overview: Do you know what data exists in your organization — and where it lives?
Single source of truth: Is there exactly one authoritative source for key metrics (revenue, customers, costs) or do spreadsheets contradict each other?
Fresh data: Are your reports and dashboards up to date (live or at least daily) or are you working with last week’s numbers?

Workflows

No copy-paste marathons: Do your recurring reports run automatically or does someone manually type numbers into slides every Monday?
Self-service access: Can decision-makers access the relevant data themselves without asking IT every time?

Security & Trust

Privacy sorted: Is it clearly defined who can see which data and who can’t?
Traceability: For important decisions, can you trace back which data they were based on?
Backup plan: Are there regular backups or would a system failure be a catastrophe?
